Democracy Works is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that collaborates with election officials, leading tech platforms, and world-class partners to drive voter access and participation. We help Americans vote by providing reliable, useful voting guidance through the sites, apps and groups they trust. This includes TurboVote, Democracy Works Election Data, the Voting Information Project (VIP), and Ballot Scout. We also co-founded the Civic Alliance alongside the CAA Foundation. The impact you’ll make:
As a part of the Marketing & Communications team, you will shape our visual communications, both internally and externally. Your creativity and content creation abilities will help enhance our branding and messaging efforts.
You will:
- Work with Marketing & Communications Team to finetune creative strategy
- Visualize design concepts, in the form of wireframes, sketches, or illustrations, that are based in broad design principles and available internal data
- Present design concepts to key internal stakeholders to earn buy-in and obtain feedback, and incorporate feedback into prototypes to finalize designs
- Develop visuals in adherence to key design principles. Visuals may include but are not limited to marketing materials, email templates, social media content, website elements, website layout, presentation materials, annual reports, and physical merchandise
- Ensure that all visuals are in adherence to brand guidelines
- Help bring all brand guidelines into one centralized Brand Guide
- Regularly reviews digital assets to identify areas for improvement, with a focus on accessibility best practices
- Apply design changes and improvements across platforms
- Support other teams in the creation of visual materials via Canva templates
- Use performance data (sourced internally and sector) to inform design enhancements
- Shares monthly analytics findings with the Marketing & Communications Team
- Execute on other tasks as may be assigned
You are someone with:
- Proven graphic design experience (including interactive media)
- Proficiency with design platforms such as Adobe Creative Cloud, Figma, Sketch, and/or Canva
- A UI-centered design approach
- Experience implementing accessibility best practices
- Awareness of nonprofit and/or civic tech industry design trends
- Strong interpersonal communication and collaboration skills
- Creativity and innovation
- Attention to detail in your work
- Time management skills, and experience balancing multiple projects and priorities
It’s a plus if you have:
- Relevant coding experience (CSS, HTML)
- Experience implementing website design on SquareSpace, Webflow, or adjacent platforms
- Video editing skills and experience
- Knowledge and/or experience related to elections and/or civic technology
How we work
Because elections take place everywhere, our employees work from all across the country. We embrace working remotely as the default. Our positions require regular, daily use of a computer (including the use of G-Suite and Slack) to conduct work and communicate with colleagues. We also have regular operating hours (10 am to 6 pm Eastern, Monday to Friday).
For those who prefer to work from an office, we are headquartered in Brooklyn, NY. We are happy to share more details about the office, including accessibility information, as on-site visits are planned.
There may be travel for occasional staff retreats or meetings as part of certain roles.
